Lucky Men

A darkly comical crime caper feature

Written by Jasmeet Singh

The setup

A gambling-addict taxi driver’s lifelong wish is fulfilled when an on-the-run bank robber dumps his loot on him and conveniently dies.

But a fool always wishes for a thousand more when granted three wishes — and what follows is a painfully excruciating yet comical tale of stubbornness meeting fate.

One has free will, and free will is the greatest virtue of all. It shall be cherished, protected and, most of all, exploited. This is what drives Paul: a directionless, self-pitying, virtue-signalling, taxi-driving gambling addict. The day his wife Kat finally kicks him out, he meets Sahej, a tragically adrift bank robber who coerces Paul into driving him out of the city and looking after the loot until the heat dies down.

On the other side of town the Ruffian, a gangster past his prime, awaits a very special delivery: laundered money in the form of a specially rigged lottery ticket. When he learns it is in the hands of a guy who “bought every last ticket”, he dispatches his henchmen to close in on the unlikely duo.

The line-up

The players

  • Paul

    Taxi driver. Gambling addict.

Vehemently believes the pursuit of pleasure is his God-given right, and hides his lack of responsibility behind virtue-signalling.

  • Sahej Singh

    Bank robber on the run

A UK-born Punjabi lad, adrift in petty crime since his family ostracised him. A robbery gone wrong sends him looking for repentance.

  • Kat

    Paul’s wife

She dragged them both up from nothing, them versus the world. A realist who has finally had enough.

  • The Ruffian

    A gangster past his prime

An odd gangster of sorts, never quite at ease in his own character, and convinced he is the real victim here.

The fight

Luck or Hukum?

  • HedonismvsStoicism
  • HappenstancevsFate
  • EscapismvsAcceptance

Flawed people put into situations bigger than themselves, and a dark yet comical story ensues. Are they all bound by luck, or is it Hukum, God’s mandate?
